Our Brand: where tailoring meets the energy of the 80s
1980 Voguish is not just a clothing label; it’s a journey rooted in the Emilian tailoring tradition and projected into a bold, contemporary aesthetic. Founded in 2012 by Simone Bonazzi, the brand represents the perfect meeting point between the relaxed elegance of the finest Italian tradition and the disruptive energy of 80s pop culture. A brand built on research, sustainability, and limited-edition production as its core pillars.
From the Po Valley to the World: Our Story
The roots of our production philosophy go back long before 2012. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the countryside near Bologna, Ettore Bonazzi turned his home cellar into a small tailoring workshop. It was his son Novello, in 1949, who officially founded “Sartoria Bonazzi”, a family business that dressed the communities of Bologna and Ferrara with its clothing for half a century, even by supplying coats for the local army officers.
After the tailor shop closure in 1997, the passion for needle and thread never died out. It was Simone Bonazzi, born in 1976 and Novello’s grandson, who rediscovered the charm of fashion in 2007, almost as a game, turning an intuition into a business. After an initial experiment in 2009 with a swimwear line, in 2012 Simone finally fulfilled his dream: founding 1980 Voguish, a brand capable of reinterpreting his two greatest passions: music and the style of the early 80s with a fresh and avant-garde approach.
Philosophy & Ideals: Optimism, Elegance, and Design
1980 Voguish embodies optimism, effortless elegance, and refined design. We don’t follow trends; we create our own style, drawing inspiration from the hedonistic nights of Studio 54 and the birth of House music, when the boldest outerwear became the undisputed star of the dance floors in New York, Chicago, and London.
“We never listened to those who told us ‘you have to do it this way’. Our style is… 1980 Voguish.” – Simone Bonazzi
Our garments are designed for a modern audience, seeking a streetwise and unconventional elegance with a rebellious yet refined soul. The goal is to turn the designer’s boldest thoughts into reality, creating collections that blend vintage nostalgia with a forward-looking tension.
From Sketch to Finished Garment: Production & Creative Process
Every 1980 Voguish collection is the result of a long and meticulous creative process, following quality standards worthy of high fashion.
1. Research & Concept
The journey begins with an idea, often inspired by a cult movie, a concert, or a very specific atmosphere. Simone Bonazzi immerses himself in in-depth research, creating a visual and stylistic narrative that will guide the entire production. This process takes months and months. Once the concept and the real artistic sketches are completed, it's time for the material selection.
2. Fabric & Material Development
Our dedication to quality leads us to create many fabrics from scratch. For the sustainable capsule Vernissage, for example, we developed fine recycled fabrics and natural dyes derived from certified plant extracts. For the Escape collection, we used high-density nylons, zero-fluorocarbon water-repellent shiny-crinkle fabrics, and waterproof denim-tech, even creating an exclusive soft-touch nylon coming from regenerated fishing nets.
3. Design & Prototyping
Once the fabrics are chosen, the technical design phase begins. Each garment is drawn and developed with fit trials on calibrated volumes and comfortable proportions. This iterative pre-samples and samples process ensures the proper conceptual vision to every style.
4. In-House A-Z Production
Unlike many brands, 1980 Voguish produces every jacket entirely in-house, from A to Z. This means that all cutting, sewing, and finishing phases take place under our direct control, allowing us to oversee every single detail and guarantee an impeccable quality standard, in a logic of artisanal, limited-edition production. The manufacturing process is managed by the essential support of Fantastic Enterprise, our exclusive worldwide business partner, a very modern facility placed in the futuristic area of Songshan, Taipei. Definitely the same working team, just thousands of km away. A longlasting business cooperation based on a unique and inseparable brotherhood.
5. Quality Control
The final step, before a garment reaches your wardrobe, is a rigorous quality control. Only garments that fully meet our strict criteria of tailoring excellence receive the final approval.
Collections That Tell a Story
Each of our capsules is a chapter in a larger narrative. From the jackets and coats line, which represents our signature touch, to special projects like Escape, inspired by the film Escape from New York and a hymn to urban rebellion, all our work is designed to be no-season, overcoming barriers of time and offering a versatile and recognizable wardrobe.
A Message of Authenticity & Sustainability
What we want to convey is a clear message: elegance doesn’t need to be shouted. It can be bold, inspired by the past, but created with an innovative and responsible look towards the future. Through the use of organic fibres, the regeneration of waste materials, and low-impact production, we are committed to creating garments that are beautiful inside and out.
1980 Voguish is for those who want to feel free to express their own personality, carrying with them a piece of Italian tailoring history and an unmistakable pop attitude.
